Let me just start with the number one reason you should vlog: it’s really fun. That’s something I learned the very first time I gave it a try. My exact words: “I think I’m going to be doing this vlogging thing, because–er, at least once in while–because I just tried it and oh my gosh, it’s a blast.”
Talking to a camera is incredibly awkward, but it is also such a rush. I write quickly, but I still edit heavily as I go. I try words out, rearrange sentences, delete, cut, copy, and paste. Vlogging is much more spontaneous. For an always deliberate person like me, it’s exciting to see what I will come up with on the spot.
A second reason to vlog is that it’s a different medium. People have told me that I speak the way I write, but I think seeing me speak is different from reading my words. I say different things, I make strange faces, I emphasize words I’d never put in italics, and I laugh at myself. There’s this whole element of performance. You could say the same thing about writing (it too is a performance), but the two are so different. If you’re looking for a new outlet, vlogging is worth a try.
A third reason to vlog is that it gives people a better sense of who you are. I know we’re all here to communicate ourselves and connect to other people, and vlogging is quite possibly an even better tool for that than blogging. When people see you, they get a better sense of who you are. They feel like they know you. Blogs are no doubt better for delving deep, but there’s something that cannot be beat about seeing a person–like you would if they were standing in front of you. If you read my blog and watch my vlogs, I’m going to have a hard time surprising you when we meet in person. Unless you think I’m short.
I love to vlog for all the reasons above, but I’ve always felt quite aimless at it. I don’t know what to vlog about or how to integrate it into what I’m doing here. I tell myself just to focus on writing, but I like the rush of vlogging. About a week ago I decided it would be cool to vlog every day for a month. If I don’t do it in August, I won’t have time again until next June (that’s depressing). I thought, yes! And then, no! And then in a waffling moment, I tweeted about it. @phampants said he’d been considering doing something like VEDA (which originally meant Vlog Every Day in April, but works for August too) and we decided to go for it.
Here’s the deal: I want to see you vlog, if you don’t already. Obviously you don’t have to vlog every day in August (though we’d be overjoyed if you joined us), but if you just did it once, that would be awesome. If you’re not sure what to vlog about, maybe reply to one of my videos or adopt a topic that Pham and I talk about. If you don’t know how to record or upload a video, it’s really easy and I can help. Consider your first vlog a favor to me. I’ll owe you a drink.
If vlogging is not your thing and this post did nothing to convince you otherwise, it would still be really awesome if you could support me through the month of August. I won’t be posting all the videos here, so the best thing to do is subscribe to my YouTube channel. I’ll tweet out the links as well. I plan to keep the videos short, talk for a bit about what’s going on with me, and then talk about some kind of subject. If you want to interact or suggest a topic, that would be double extra awesome.
This is probably not the last time I will try to convince you to vlog, so keep resisting if you must, but I’ll get to you eventually. I do have a history of winning people over.

Heh. Every time I attempt to vlog, I realize how often I roll my eyes. Woops! I haven’t figured out how to upload it to my blog yet. Maybe I’ll use my time in Alaska to teach myself something new!
I tried making a vlog once, but when I put it on youtube the audio wouldn’t sync up with the video and it was just annoying. I think my webcam is incompatible with youtube or something, so that was that. Looking forward to your vlogs!
OK, I’m convinced. I will give it a try, but my RL friends will surely laugh at me : )
The only vlog type thing i’ve ever done was a cheesy christmas greeting in front of the tree one year hehe.
They may laugh now, but once you become a YT partner, quit your day job and make a living purely on YT…they won’t be laughing for long.
I was SO SCARED when I did my first vlog that I rambled on for 10 minutes!! But the second one was in song so I was done in a neat little 3:30 of total awkwardness but you’re right, it is really fun. Plus you get to see yourself TALKING and how other people actually see you, which is always interesting!
Join us!!! If anything, vlog once a week on Friday and you can pick what topic you want to talk about that we discussed during the week
Ok, twist my arm! You know I love vlogging and this sounds like a fun little experiment. I can’t guarantee that I’ll make it through the entire month, but I’ll try!
Do it! You have Ashley & I to coach you on. Aside from weekends, I will post in the mornings and Ashley will post at night. So you know what to expect and strive for. Be part of the awesome (disclaimer: Ashley is by definition awesome. I’m hoping the awesome will account for me by association)!
I LOVE that subtle jab at me in this post. =)
I’m excited for Sunday. Though, I have to produce 2.
Yes!!! Do it. I’d totally love to vlog, but my blog is slightly more anonymous so not sure that would work.
You saw my pathetic attempt for erin’s baby shower, didn’t you? Although I must admit, it is kind of fun, so maybe, just maybe, I’ll do another one in August but only because you asked SO nicely :)
It wasn’t pathetic at all!! I loved it. :-)
I’d say that “I should start” but… oh look at that, I already have! :)
I’ve barely been able to handle DailyBooth (and I haven’t really been able to handle that), so I don’t know if I’m quite ready for vloging. I know we’ve talked about podcasting, but I think that’s what I want to do (i.e. no video, just audio).
But perhaps I’ll give it a try at some point in the coming months. I mean, you did convince me to do DailyBooth.
I tried to vlog once and it didn’t work out too well. I’ve since used skype a bit more and have become a bit more comfortable but not a whole lot. We shall see. Maybe I will give it another go and join you, but it will require some liquid courage.
Such a convincing argument! Not that I would need much convincing….
Maybe we could have a question to answer every day, as a topic to keep our vlogs tied together throught the VEDA project? Come up with a list of questions for the month and designate each day it’s own question to incorporate into the video as we would?
I second this idea!
Hmmm…I may do this someday. haha. I’ve never given much thought to vlogging, but I do enjoy your blogs, and your dry little sense of humor :)
I’m in! I will definitely be needing some ideas/inspiration, though… And I make no guarantees that I’ll ACTUALLY be able to post a vlog every day in August, because I’ll be in Vegas for a few days, and then in Colorado for the last week. But I’ll try!
I won’t commit to vlogging anytime soon, but I 100% support your vlogs. I enjoy them quite a bit :)
I did one about two weeks ago and it was a disaster. Mainly because I was the wrong way up when I uploaded it. Here it is though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9jBeBU_H2o
I will give this a try, even though I’m a day late. Not sure how great it’s going to be. We’ll see :-)
I was looking for reasons why to vlog to try and motivate me to doing so, you may have pushed me in the right direction at least. :D
I’ve been thinking about vlogging for the longest time. I still haven’t done it. The thing is, I talk to myself all the time and, by that I mean literal conversations – I will answer back to myself. I dunno, it’s nicer than thinking silently since it’s easier to loose track of what you’re actually thinking about. Whereas, getting whatever it is you’re thinking about out there, through text or talking to yourself or vlogging, it’s just easier to keep track of the topic at hand. Anyway, I’ve never been a social person outside of the internet or my family – so putting my ability to talk to myself about things and forming that as a vlog to get my opinions out there, may actually be a good thing for me… maybe?
i’m about to start a vlog of my 18th year of existence, already made a few vlogs but this will be a more consistent undertaking http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzDhrCnt71I&feature=channel_video_title
