I’ve been feeling this urge to connect with creative people. Not because we all have the same interests, but because we dream big and place a certain value on creating new things. My creative thing is writing, but I find inspiration in music and photography and design. I love to see people do whatever they do really well.
I challenge you (and myself as well) to pick a creative project and spend the month of July working on it. I mean for “creative” to be defined broadly and your project is completely of your own choosing in both content and size. It can even be something you have already started. The point is to spend a month focused on doing whatever it is you do and share that with other people. That’s the other part of the challenge: you have to share your creative project to some degree. You don’t have to share your finished product (your challenge might just be to get started), but you have to share your process, because I think that’s how we can best inspire each other.
My project will be to write the first part of my new novel, Some Other Air to Breathe. Your project might be to write a new song, design a new blog layout, write a novella, sew a new dress, try some new recipes, take some new photographs, make some new products for your etsy shop, or film a new video. You set the parameters of your challenge, whether it’s to start a novel or finish one, try one new recipe a week or five, write one new poem or write one new poem every day. The point is to focus on pursuing your creative interests and not to burden yourself with an impossible task. Find something that will push you, but not overwhelm or defeat you.
If you’re interested, here’s what you should do:
1. Leave a comment on this post or email me at writetoreach@gmail.com letting me know you want to participate. I will list everyone participating here. Help me spread the word to other people you think might be interested.
2. Decide on your project and write a post on your own blog sometime this week letting us know what you’ll be working on. Feel free to apply whatever additional rules or parameters you want to be part of your challenge. If you think your readers might be interested, try to get your post up earlier so that they’ll have to time to prepare as well. Please send them over here so that I know everyone who is participating.
3. Periodically throughout the month, blog about your project and the progress you’re making. You may choose to share what you’ve been working on or just talk about the process. There is no precise schedule, so you can share as much or as little as you want. Like any challenge, you’ll get as much out of it as you put into it.
4. Connect with other creative people participating in the challenge. Cheer people on, ask them how it’s going, and give them feedback if they ask for it.
5. Write a post at the end of July with your thoughts on the project, whether you judge it a success or failure, whether you will be continuing with your project or not.
More than just challenging ourselves to be creative, the point of this for me is to connect with other creative people. I could use your ideas for how we can best do this. It’s my secret hope that we emerge from this at the end of July with at least a small group of people who will continue to support each other creatively.

I would love to participate in this month long project. I’ve been meaning to start new projects but time is my enemy. I will make time my friend. I can’t wait to see what everyone is doing! Yay for creativity!!!!
I’m totally on board!!! This will help me to get my second book done. This is the push I really need to buckle down. And I’m totally with you on wanting to connect with other creative people. I can’t wait to get started!! Will post it up tomorrow.
Yes! I’m in! I’m writing my first novella and three chapter in, I’m stuck. This sounds like it could motivate me to get it done.
Also, could I get a copy of your first novel? I’d love to read it!
I wish I was creative – alas, I am not!
You know, maybe I should participate in this… To be honest, I’ve been meaning/wanting to give writing prose a try again, maybe trying to write a short story or two? Maybe I’ll give this a try and it’ll get me going…!
LOVE this idea! I’m IN!
Count me in. :D This sounds like it’s EXACTLY what I need!
I really like your idea, and I hope it succeeds. However I’m not sure whether I’m ready to get involved in something like this at the moment. I need to have a think about it, and I’ll let you know as soon as possible if I can.
You can count me in! This sounds awesome and just the push I need to really get started on that novel of mine. :)
Count me in! I’ve been meaning to create some items for the shop and work on packaging for the paper goods that I sell. Plus, I bought a few more stamps that I’m itching to try out!
At the same time, I’m trying to devote some of my time to the project I started not too long ago, the food blog. I love to share recipes and hear about others who cook. The goal was to offer yummy recipes that I’ve made and present photos for readers. So far the project is going well, so I’ll probably tack this on. I may finish the first idea before the month is over.
This is such a fun idea! I look forward to all the different projects!
I am very interested in participating. Thank you for making me think.
Looks like I’ll be making more videos
LOVE the idea! I always read your blog—I find that i have a lot in common with you.
I received my new Nikon camera today, and would love to make photoblogging my project for July. I have been wanting to for a while, and come up with every excuse in the book not to. However, your post has encouraged me to get my butt into gear. Another thing I would like to work on is posting to my personal blog more often.
@MprfectlyCandid (leaving my twitter name in case you need it for the list.)
Yes. I will be doing this. What a great idea. I will be doing photography also.
What a great idea! I want to participate… Anyone want to help me choose something??
Best,
Hannah Katy
thank YOU for this. i have a post in draft files titled “waiting to be inspired” and perhaps you are my kick in the butt that i need.
for the month of july i’m hoping to start that damn book i always said i would write…
DOING THIS! And actually posted about the writing project earlier today before I read this. HUZZAH!
What a great idea Ashley! I need to be more creative in a few areas of my life. I need to think on this and see what I can come up with. I will most definitely be cheering you and the others on though as you undertake your project(s).
I’m in! Not sure what I’m doing yett, and I’d better pick something quick, as it’s day one already!
I’m excited to follow everyone’s adventures!
Since I’m already trying to finish a novel by the end of June er wait July now, and my blog is mostly me complaining about it anyway, I am not going to actually participate, but I look forward to reading about the Creativity Challenge as it continues through the month.
Fabulous idea! I’ve been debating what my creative thing for the month will be, but I think I have the answer. I’m going to be vegan for the month. Not immediately “creative,” but challenging, and it will force me to be creative in my approach. (Also, I have an ulterior motive: training for my first half marathon.) Am definitely excited to participate. Thanks Ashley!
Challenge is up! http://foxandbunny.wordpress.com/2010/07/01/creativity-challenge-game-on/
