An Old List or Who Wants to Play Kick The Can?

by Ashley on January 5, 2010

At some point in my late high school or early college years, when I should have been out doing something exciting, I was instead inside (pathetically on a Friday or Saturday night, I bet) writing a list of Lifetime Goals and what I called Cross Off Goals.  The lifetime goals have not kept pace with my age or education; they’re terribly dated and I might as well toss them out.  The Cross Off Goals, however, still appeal to me.  Here they are:

1 Obtain a Bachelor’s degree.
2 Learn to play guitar.
3 Learn to swim well.
4 Vacation in Cape Cod.
5 See Josh Groban in concert.1
6 Write a novel of 200+ pages. (Summer 2008)
7 Bench press 100+ pounds.2
8 Run 5 miles every day for a month+.
9 Jazzercise3
10 Get a 4.0 in college with at least 3 classes. (Fall 2007)4
11 Have reason to kiss the sand at Cannon Beach 5
12 Tour Europe.
13 Wear a power suit.6
14 MA (Spring 2009)
15 Water ski.
16 See a Broadway play. 7
17 Master ping pong.
18 Learn to play Kick the Can. 8
19 Effectively storm out. 9
20 See Coldplay in concert.10
21 Play 18 holes of golf.
22 Make a stairway entrance. 11
23 Get married.
24 Ski in Aspen.
25 Compete in an athletic competition. (Sound to Narrows 2004)
26 Get published.
27 Read the Bible cover to cover.
28 Make the first move.
29 Take a lone road trip of 12+ hours (with good music, of course) (WA to CA 8/15/06).
30 Run 1,000+ miles in one year. 12
31 Nap in a hammock.
32 See 130 lbs. and maintain. 13
33 Run in New Zealand. 14
34 Walk around St. Andrew’s campus. 15
35 Write a love letter.
36 Run a half marathon. (Woodinville 9/5/05)
37 Run a marathon
38 Go to the Olympics (Summer/Winter) and see as many events as possible. 16
39 PhD17
  1. I’ve actually seen him 3 times. []
  2. I think my best ever was 60 lbs. []
  3. Does anyone do this anymore? I should start looking for leg warmers. []
  4. It took me until grad school, but I did it–more than once now! []
  5. This has a secret meaning. Shh. []
  6. In red, of course. []
  7. Honestly, I don’t like plays or musicals that much, but I’m counting on enjoying this. []
  8. Does anyone know how to play? Teach me! []
  9. Hopefully slamming a door as I go. []
  10. I’ve seen them a million times now.  My favorite concert act. []
  11. In an awesome dress, of course. []
  12. I guess I was really into running when I wrote this list. []
  13. I’m much better at 140-145 and maintain. []
  14. Inspired by Lord of the Rings, no doubt. []
  15. This has everything to do with Prince William []
  16. The plan is London 2012 []
  17. I think this was a late addition.  I never had any intention of getting a PhD before. []

hello there! I am finally attempting to catch up on all my blog reading and I feel like I haven’t popped over here in far too long! so I think a happy new year is still in order! :)

as for your post, I think this is a fabulous list! many of these are on my own “list,” the one in my head since I haven’t actually written all of these types of things down, though I am now thinking I should. my fave here is number 2, learn to play guitar, which I have always wanted to do! though, I’m not sure if my fingers could stretch that way. I played the oboe years ago, but that was a whole different animal :)

what would also be on my list? numbers 12, 23, 28 and 32, for sure.

If I could find out where and how, I would be Jazzercising. When I grew up I lived in a one story house but I always wished it was two, with an open staircase so I could make an entrance like that in a dress. Love your list!

This list is awesome. I was just looking over the “101 things in 1001 days” list and crossing things off of that. But these are some great goals and I think you should continue to track your progress on this list.

Also, the Lifetime Goals sound like they’d be pretty entertaining to read as well.

You’ve played 18 holes of golf…at Parkland Putters.

I made a list similar to this in college but with 100 things. Every once in awhile I take a glance at it and realize…..yep, still have a lot of living to do

I love musicals. Let’s get a blog group together and go see a broadway play! ROADTRIP! haha

Maybe after we can hop across the Atlantic, tour Europe, and visit my friends at Univ. St. Andrews! haha

You’ve acheived a good amount of those goals! I think my life list would be shockingly short.

I like how goals such as ‘get married’ are treated with seemingly equal importance as ones like ‘nap in a hammock’. Who needs priorities, right?

Make a stairway entrance….this one sounds grand. I’ve always wanted to have a movie star-esque entrance like this, too.

I love how you’ve managed to strike a balance of romantic and practical here. And the footnotes are adorable.

Great list—inspiring.

The Cape isn’t far from where I live. Maybe a two hour drive or so. I’ve been there once, I went last year I think.

Ohhhh what I wouldn’t give to nap in a hammock right now. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a real hammock. Is that weird???

This list is awesome. “Stairway Entrance”…that is lovely.

I’ve read the Bible cover-to-cover, made a stairway entrance and played 18 holes of golf. I’ll let you cross them off your list if you want!

Wow, you bench-pressed 60 lbs? I can’t even say what my best was but it was probably 20 lbs or so. You have a lot of great goals and I love how there’s no time limit on them. It just happens when it happens.

I NEED to make a list like this, because I have terrible memory and there are way many things I want to do than I can remember at one time. I’ve played Kick the Can with cousins in upstate New York, make sure you have a big group of people, it’s more fun! If you haven’t napped in a hammock, I highly recommend it over wearing a power suit.

Playing kick the can is easy. I grew up playing it. Brings back lots of memories.
