I have been thinking of NaNoWriMo. If you have been living under a rock, that’s National Novel Writing Month. Also know as, the month of November, when a gang of crazy people set out to write 50,000 word novels in one month. I have known about NaNoWriMo for a long time, but I have never participated. I wasn’t going to participate this year either. As much as I hate to talk about how busy I am and as much as I don’t believe other people when they tell me how busy they are, when I was thinking clearly, I knew that I didn’t have time for this. But, I’m not thinking clearly anymore. I guess my feeling is, why the hell not give it a try? Worst case scenario, I get a lot more writing done that I would have otherwise.
I want to encourage anyone who’s even considering it to just jump off the cliff and join in the fun already, but I also want to say that if you don’t realize how difficult it’s going to be to write 50,000 words in one month, let me tell you. I did it once. And this is coming from someone who writes quickly and writes a lot, but putting down that many words was one of the most challenging things I have ever done. By the end, I was half crazy. I felt like a part of me went along with the words. But, it was also the most amazing feeling to look at what I had done. In fact, it’s still an amazing feeling just to look at it now and say, “I created this.”
There are a lot of critics of NaNoWriMo. It’s mostly people who think that if a word count is your goal, then you’re bound to write crap. Noted. But, if you have no goal, you’re bound to never write anything at all. The reason why so many people want to write novels and never do is because it’s really hard and they don’t know where to start. You start by writing and you finish my continuing to write. You will write a lot of crap whether you take your sweet time or write 50,000 words in 30 days. I think, though, that with every word you put down, you’re gaining more experience and getting closer to writing something that is not crap. It’s really easy to spend all your time getting ready to write a novel. You can buy a new laptop, get a new desk, prepare outlines, research settings, but you don’t really have anything until you start writing. For fans of The Big Bang Theory, it’s like Sheldon learning to swim on the carpet instead of jumping into the deep end of the pool.
I’m talking mostly to myself, of course. I have a novel that’s begging me to write it. Characters who want to speak. And limits of my own that need to be pushed. There are still a lot of things I’m uncertain about, but I’m not going to figure them out while I sit here not writing. I don’t have a life free of distractions. I don’t have the kind of motivation that can’t be ignored. I don’t even have time enough to write a little every day. But, I’m going to take on the challenge anyway. There is a very good chance I’ll fail, but no chance that I’ll finish with less than I started.
The amazing thing about running races is that you get to do it with other people. You’re not the crazy person out on the street by yourself, running when you could be doing a million things easier and more comfortable. Instead, you’re the crazy person surrounded by a bunch of other crazy people who are excited to be doing the thing that’s not easy. I hope that NaNoWriMo feels the same way. If you’re thinking about doing it, just give in already and join the rest of us. We’re waiting for you.
If you’re already in, let me know. If you want to join, visit NaNoWriMo and sign up. My username is writetoreach. Add me as a buddy.
I know what the Wri Mo in NaNoWriMo really stands for, but I always think of it as a command to Write More!

I don’t know if you saw one of my most recent tweets, but I was asking if anyone was going to do this. Because, as odd as this is, I had to photograph a 15-year-old who was participating this year, and it inspired me to maybe do that. The problem is that I don’t have a story I want to tell just yet. But I think this could be a lot of fun if I actually figure out what the hell to write about and go with it, despite me possibly being crazy at the end of the month. ;)
Wow, good luck with that. It’s definitely an interesting idea, but I know I’m nowhere near ready being able to do something like that.
I attempted last year and definitely plan to do it again!
I’m all about NaNoWriMo – I think it’s fantastic.
If it gets people out there writing, what could be bad about it? Sure, the goal there is word count. But, ya gotta take it in context – it’s getting people to care about their writing. Sure, there will probably be some people just writing 50,000 words of crap. But usually one becomes emotionally invested in their writing if it gets that long.
I’ll be participating in it (as you know). :) I’m so psyched! What’s your S/N on it? Mine’s Nyxy. :)
Opps…for some reason I had figured that your blog was one I already commented on about this. (oppsies…sorry bout that…heh). So, sorry for any confusion the last comment may have caused (specifically the egotistical “as you know” portion of it).
that’s so great, i just posted about NaNoWriMo earlier today! i’m joining for the first time ever and, let me tell you, i am half crazy excited and half wanting to barf! i think my biggest challenge will definitely be not throwing in the towel at the first sign of trouble. but i have the idea, and i’ve been busy sketching out my plan for the last week, which should get me off to a good start (yes? no?).
i guess my thought is this: the worst that can happen is that i don’t write 50k words. but if i’ve at least written 50, then i’ve gotten farther than usual.
Last year I signed up for it and it was a total write off (no pun intended) so this year I’m going for the blog one instead (can’t remember what its called)…
I’m posting about this on Nov 1! I signed up and I’m really excited/nervous…I am super busy as well but I know I have to just throw myself into it wholeheartedly. I may not finish, but I at least want to try really hard.
I think the concept is great… I know I’m going to write crap, but at least crap is words that can be turned into prose!
I think you should def. do it. Even if you don’t finish, it’s fun to read the forums and get e-mails from authors, etc.-
YEAH!!! I’m so happy. Now we can attempt it together!! I don’t have my outline together fully yet, I know, I only have 2 more days, but I’m a last minute girl. Good luck!!
I signed up for it last year but didnt finish. I have a hard time forcing words to come when they aren’t ready. Thats what I ran into last year. Best of luck to you though!
I’ve already jumped off the cliff. I wish I could go to the first write-in in my state, but it’s too far away. So I’ll be writing in my room. I might stay up late on Saturday and start writing at midnight Sunday morning, just to be hardcore, but that’s a pretty big might. It’s past my bedtime at that point lol.
I participated in NaNo last year, but didn’t finish. I plan on finishing this year (it’s on my List of 101 things to do in 1001 days). Email me your NaNo username and I’ll add you as a NaNo buddy. And then I’ll pester you about word counts and such. Because we all need the encouragement.
Let’s be buddies! http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/210969
sweet beans! i’m doing it too! good luck and i’ll add you as a buddy.
I’m doing it (as you know)! And my reasoning is the same as yours, I may not write 50,000 this month but I will write a LOT more words than I would’ve before. I may shoot for 25,000 instead.
Howdy – just found your blog via 20 something bloggers. I definitely plan to continue reading!
Also, I’ve been contemplating a run at Nanowrimo. I’ve signed up and I have a bit of an idea, but I’m afraid that (even with work and revising) it’s going to be the literary equivalent of a polished turd.
Anyway, I’ve added you as a buddy. My user name is penguin86. (I’ve been using some form of that user name for websites since high school, even though I find it embarrassing and juvenile. Oh well, tradition!)
I’m proud of you for jumping off the cliff and doing this this month! I think one of the most insightful things you’ve ever said is in this post – even if it’s just more of an observation:
“I know what the Wri Mo in NaNoWriMo really stands for, but I always think of it as a command to Write More!”
AWESOME.
50,000 words is A LOT of words!! I write all the time for work but I don’t write novels and I definitely don’t write 50,000 words a month! my guess would be closer to 20,000…. so while NaNoWriMo is a very ambitious goal, I wish you tons of luck! and kudos to you for actually committing to do something like this. who knows what you will end up with, but like you said, there’s no chance it will be less than when you started.
