On My Mad Dope Ride

by Ashley on September 18, 2009

If you read my blog, then you know me.  You know me better than most people.  You know so many random facts about me that I can’t even come up with more when prompted.

This one, I’ve probably mentioned before, but you’re likely to have missed it.  So let me come clean now: I drive a really cool car.  Like, really cool . . . if it was 1999 and I was a 16 year old boy.1

I drive a late-90s Civic with all kinds of customizations and stuff.  The rims are fancy and the exhaust thing is bigger than normal.  Even the little knob thing on the stick shift has a design to it.  But, you can probably tell by my language that I know nothing about these things and I don’t care that much.  It’s pretty and shiny, but I bought it that way.

I really do like to drive.  I had my license by 9am on my 16th birthday.  And, I like to drive my car.  After driving my mom’s SUV for the week I was at home, it was fun to come back to my little Civic.  It felt like driving a go cart and go carts are fun.

But, sometimes it’s embarrassing to drive my really cool car, because it’s a total mis-match to my personality and when guys try to talk to me about my car (and they regularly do), I have nothing to say.  I have been asked more than once if I race cars.  How anyone could know me for more than 5 minutes and think I race cars is beyond me.  I usually laugh and say, ” no.”  It’s just that they’re always so disappointed that I know nothing about the customizations.  And I always end up feeling stupid for knowing nothing more than that I should get my oil changed every 3,000 miles or so.  I do occasionally aspire to be that girl who knows all of these kinds of things, but I’d rather spend my time writing and watching TV.

As much as I love being the envy of teenage boys, I think my next car will make me the envy of responsible adults.

Knowing about cars is overrated. Except when it comes to making sure you ain’t diddled out of money by dodgy mechanics.

Mind you, I can’t even drive so my knowledge of cars is SEVERELY limited…

Hahaha that’s so funny. Your car DEFINITELY doesn’t seem to fit your personality. I always associate little rice rockets with people who race. Or hang out with OTHER people who drive them. And they are constantly looking into what new kinds of mods they can do to their cars.

A responsible adult car, eh? (Yes, I went Canadian for a moment.) – Do you think you’ll go for a minivan? ;)

I used to drive a flashy, customized car (ok so it was a neon, but it was yellow and sporty) that was sort of like a go-cart and it was very fun. But when I traded up it was nice. I felt like my car didn’t match my personality then, it does so much more now.

haha this made me smile :D It’s a funny thought, you racing cars! I know what you mean though, I drive a silver mustang hand-me-down from ’95 that is not quite in line with my personality — my dream car is more sensible!

“…if it was 1999 and I was a 16 year old boy.” Hilarious.

Knowing a lot about cars would be one of those nice things to have, but ultimately I can’t devote the time or mental energy to it. I mean, as I’m sure you understand, there are so many other greater things to focus on and questions we can be asking! That said, it’s kind of sad when someone asks me something about my car and I just give off blank stares (this is more of a masculinity thing than anything else).

It is funny how cars can somehow become aligned or fit our personalities, or how there can be a big dichotomy in your case. It’s like we expect someone to have a car that “fits,” and when they “don’t” (I put that in quotes because what the hell does it all mean, really) we think it’s strange. My car probably fits my personality; the Prius has that sensibility yet it also displays my unending sense of guilt and the feeling that I’m constantly messing up the world and I need to start doing something right, haha.

That’s really funny.

I have a black Intrepid and I feel like it’s a guys’ car.

I had a feeling when you said “exhaust thing” that you had no clue what you’re talking about. Haha, too funny! I know absolutely NOTHING about cars. I know how to pump gas and I just recently found the coolant under the hood and filled that up. But that’s about it.

And, yeah, when I think about a car you have…I don’t think of the one you described. :)

You crack me up. So I got an 07 Toyota Corolla; it’s a good car but not something that I die hard love. My dad really loves my car and asked for my 2nd keyless remote so he can just have one to play with. When he had to get a new car, he had to find something more slick than mine. He got an 09 Honda Civic. He’s PROUD of his cool car. And me? Yeah, I’m jealous of his car.

haha. i would have never guessed that you drove that kind of car! i think my sister has one…but she and her hubby used to street race so i guess i that fits.

i, on the other hand, am a train wreck behind the wheel. i got my license when i was 18, and only because my little sister was getting hers and i refused to let that happen before me. and i can drive myself to the necessary places (see: grocery store, friends houses, shopping). BUT, and it’s a biggie, i don’t drive on freeways! there! i said it! okay, i’m embarrassed now!

Lol, cute! If I had a car like that I would know nothing about it. I still don’t know much about cars anyway. I do love driving, and I know mine drives and it’s blue and occasionally I remember the make and model and year…but that’s about it. But I like driving! (That’s the part I concentrate on)

This post makes me so happy! My first car was kind of like that to me. I loved it, though all the fancy schmancy stuff about it I didn’t really get. (:

I drive an Accord, and I feel like it fits me pretty well. My first car, though, totally didn’t. And as long as you enjoy driving your car, that’s all that matters.

I drive a black ’98 Honda civic. Nothing customized about it! I adore civics, though. They’re great on gas mileage!

I drive a yellow car. Everyone knows it’s me when I drive by. I love it.

But that’s about as far as it goes.

My brother and I had to trade cars once because I needed a PA inspection, yet I lived here in NC. He drove my car back home and I had his … for two weeks … two painful weeks. He drives a Hyundai Tiburon, which sounds awesome, except my brother is a moron and tweaked it more than you can imagine. Crazy subs in the trunk – which meant I could barely turn the music on without being accosted by the sound – a nutty paint job of red with silver stripes, low-riding where it was an inch from the ground, tinted windows, and Lamborghini doors. That’s right, the ones that open upward instead of out. I felt like the biggest jackhole ever and was approached with questions more times than I could even count, including by half a dozen marines when I made a rest-stop visit on my way to switch our cars back.
