"What the World Needs Now is Boy Bands"

by Ashley on June 17, 2009

A couple weeks ago I was listening to the 2ge+her soundtrack and I came across this quote. Let me just say that I couldn’t agree more. In tough economic times, Americans often turn to entertainment. I guess it’s a form of escapism.

If history teaches us anything, it’s that every 8-10 years, there is a new wave of boy bands. Well, it’s about that time again. Prepare yourself for some smooth melodies, some flashy choreography, and some terrible clothing.

The boy bands might be the driving force, but I hope they bring with them a resurgence of feel good pop music. I guess pop music hasn’t really gone anywhere; that would be a contradiction in terms.  So, maybe it’s not pop music that’s changed, but me. Still, I’m hoping for a pop wave that’s strong enough to sweep away even the cynical mid-twenty somethings like me.

At 14, I was kind of embarrassed to be an NSYNC fan. This time I hope not to take myself so seriously.

Get your glow sticks ready!

I was obsessed with NSYNC, haha. I remember seeing them for the first time–a concert special on the Disney channel. Then (in ’98, I believe–wow, over a decade ago!), my aunt took me to see them in concert. Britney Spears opened for them, and no one knew who she was. I also had a glow stick.

Ah, memories.

OMG! LOL. I was a huge NSYNC fan “back in the day”, as people like to call it. You could not see the walls in my room because they were covered in NSYNC posters. Man, I wish I had pictures. I remember my dad surprising my sister and I with concert tickets. We freaked out. HAHA. Those were the days :-)

Thanks for the memory.

We have the Jonas brothers? Ugh, there’s no hope!

I still love NSync, the Backstreet Boys, Boyzone, 98* and my personal favorite, Westlife.

Thanks to last.fm They’re all at my fingertips.

We could start a boy band….! Oh..wait, so we can’t.

Um, I would be SO PSYCHED if boy bands came back. I’m not going to lie, I was a Dreamstree, BSB, and Nsync girl. Nsync was my first concert ever. LOVED it. Haha, I wonder what will come next!

As a 2ge+her fan, thanks for reminding me that it’s been too long since I’ve last listened to their dulcet harmonies.

I bought the BSB cd that came out two years ago. And it’s amazing.

I’m perfectly okay with an NSYNC reunion tour. That’d be ah-maz-ing. =)

Ah, 2ge+her. Whenever they pop up on my IPod, the nostalgia wave hits me full force. Ha.

I’ll be on the lookout for new boybands — I don’t think the Jonas Brothers count. Or anyone manufactured by Disney.

Haha, oh I haven’t thought about 2ge+her or anything like that in a LONG time (except when you remind me about the existence of NSYNC). Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like there’s something in the air that’s leading lots of people in our age group/demographic to go back to the bands of middle school/high school and those bands are making themselves heard again in one way or another.

I’m being a little bit vague because I plan on writing on this from my own POV. But while I’m not big on the boy bands (perhaps obviously so), I’m definitely feeling and undergoing something similar which I will be blogging about later, mwahaha….

Oh the memories of boy bands like N’Sync. I used to dance around my house with my sister to “Bye, bye, bye.” I suppose it is time for another wave. I mean the women have made a comeback already, so clearly the men need to get on it. Britney Spears and the Spice Girls have made attempts. Though arguably Britney was more successful.

I agree that bands like the Jonas Brothers do not count. Of course, Britney Spears came out of Disney. That does seem to be the trend from the past.

I was a hardcore Backstreet Boys fan, as in, I thought it was my destiny to marry Nick Carter.

Hahaha, that’s awesome! Very interesting fact that to know that every 8-10 years there are new groups of boy bands. Yeah, it’s been a while…time for some new ones. Some feel-good pop that drags in 20-somethings would be nice to see. :)

Okay, so I’ve been following your blog for a few months now, and I’ve been hesitant to comment because… well… it kind of feels like I’d be commenting on MY OWN blogs (which is just trippy and weird)

But a 2ge+her quote?

I had to stop by and say HECK YEAH!

I wasn’t a big boy band fan, but I STILL listen to 2ge+her in a manner that might be just a hair too passionate to be considered “ironic.”

Kudos!

“A couple weeks ago I was listening to the 2ge+her soundtrack…”

That is a beautiful first sentence :)

Now, maybe it’s just me, but I think *NSYNC should reunite. I know, too big of a dream, but I’ll still dream.

I was never really an Nsync or BSB fan when I was a teenager, but I loved 2ge+her. I can only hope there’s another group like them.

I know my calculus. And that song still makes it on some of my playlists…

I actually just did a post about LFO today! I loved 2ge+her, I still have the soundtrack on my ipod, and it occasionally comes up on shuffle while I’m at the gym and always makes me smile.

I was totally guilty of boy band fanmanship. I went to a BSB concert in 8th grade and screamed my lungs out from my floor seats. I’m happy to say I got over that phase quickly, though.
