It’s rare that I have a weekend worth recapping, but this one was a lot of fun.
- The family got in early Friday morning. I had rehearsal that morning, so I couldn’t meet them until a bit later. Though, during rehearsal I did get my first ever text from my mom. It was, “momhere.” No space; she doesn’t know how to add a space.
- As I tweeted on Friday, they told us not to text or use twitter during the ceremony. I didn’t. There was nowhere to put my phone. They also told us not to move our tassels. When you’re already graduated, you start the ceremony with the tassel on the left side. For some reason, that seemed like a big deal to me. Makes me feel like I’ve actually gotten somewhere.
- I spent the rest of Friday hanging out by the pool with my family at their hotel. Actually, we were drinking by the pool. My dad went into the hotel to get us more drinks. I guess the bartender can only give you one drink at a time, but my dad said he had to get drinks for his husband-in-law. The bartender made him explain what a husband-in-law was. My dad explained that his husband-in-law had married his first wife and they were all in California celebrating their daughter’s graduation. For that, the bartender gave him three beers–one for my dad, one for my step-dad, and one for me.
- Graduation was super early on Saturday morning. My worst fear was oversleeping, but I got up in time. My second worst fear was fainting from the heat, but I survived it, even in my black gown. My third worst fear was tripping across the stage, but I stayed firmly on my feet. My fourth worst fear was having my cap fall right off, but the bobby pins held it in place.
- It was a small graduation and my family (and my friend Lisa) were seated near the aisle, so when I walked by my brother coughed “nerd” at me. That made me laugh.
- They gave us legit diplomas. No waiting the whole summer for that piece of paper. It’s pretty, but I don’t know what to do with it.
- My step-dad took about a million picture, which I’m so thankful for, but I don’t have any of them yet.
- I mingled a bit after the ceremony. I’m about the worst mingler ever, but I gave it a little effort and drank some sparkling something before handing over my cap and gown. FYI, Master’s hoods are really uncomfortable.
- I regretted not giving Lisa a key to all the people we’ve talked about via nickname that she’s never met, because they were almost all in attendance, including especially Leggings Girl and Normal Library Guy.
- Saturday night I finally got to see Star Trek! I’d mentioned about 34325 times that I wanted to see it and my dad caught the hint, I guess. It was excellent, and I have a little crush on Spock, which I hope doesn’t mean I’m into emotionally unavailable men with weird ears and eyebrows.
- Sunday we spent some more time by the pool and then I sent the family off. That part wasn’t as difficult as I expected, but it was nice to have them here for the weekend.
- My dad called me from the airport to tell me that there was an Applebee’s in their terminal and it made them think of me. I wish I had a reputation for liking a classier or at least unique restaurant. But, what can I say, there’s no beating the Oriental Chicken Rollup.

It looks like you had an awesome weekend! And I’m super jealous of the pool picture. It looks amazing.
Congrats!!
Btw, I also have a crush on Spock, don’t worry!
Your family sounds adorable and really fun! Your dad is a good sport. “Husband-in-law” – now that’s funny!
Congratulations! I love Applebees. Too bad Husband hates it, or I’d go every chance I got.
haha, your dad is awesome! I’m glad you had a great grad weekend!
i’m passing along husband-in-law. funny funny.
and hooray for graduating!!! fun!!!
I’m more of a “chicken fajita rollup” gal myself. Ha. Glad you had a great weekend with the family.
Ashley, you are adorable. And what do you mean you had no place to put your camera? You’re in a masters gown! Those long sleeves double for pockets where you can stick tissue and your camera! Even I know better! Besides, is it wrong that even though I don’t have a masters degree, I have my own masters gown and 2 hoods? I swear, I only used them for good! I was a high school teacher for 2 years and I needed it for graduation!
Congratulations one more time ;) AND your weekend sounds fabbbuloouss. I love that they told you not to tweet hahaha
Congrats! What a nice weekend. My brother graduated his undergrad this weekend which was fun – but I wish my family had a pool to have sat by also! :)
My school didn’t even have a rehearsal. No one knew what to do. We all just showed up and they told us five minutes before. Can you say CONFUSING??? My parents kept asking me what was going to be happening, and I just had to keep telling them “I DON’T KNOW! THEY HAVEN’T TOLD US ANYTHING!!!”
CONGRATULATIONS! It’s great that your family was able to celebrate with you. It’s also great that you didn’t trip while getting your diploma (I have a feeling I won’t be so lucky since I’m a total klutz).
Sounds like a great weekend, Ashley!
I laughed out loud about your mom texting “momhere” with no space! Haha.
Congrats again!!
My little Ashley is all grown up.
Okay, I’m done.
You know what else we have in common other than our band loves and movie star crushes? Our desire for emotionally available men.
It never ends.
You and I are TOTALLY on the same wavelength, cause I had a crush on Spock too. I mean, James who? Spock is where it’s at!!!
Congrats on the Graduation again!!
Congrats! Sounds like you had a great weekend. What an accomplishment! I can’t wait till I have a Masters.
Things I had a chuckle over: your mom texting “momhere” (my mom always signs her texts “Love, Mom” as if I had no clue who they were from), your brother coughing “nerd,” and your Star Trek comment on wanting emotionally unavailable men. Wasn’t that a great movie?!
Aw- that sounds like a great graduation weekend and congratulations once again!
Glad you finally got to see Star Trek too, though I’m more of a Kirk guy myself, but I liked the guy who played Spock in the movie and I thought he did a good job. Also, I love that in the future the Federation is headquartered not in New York or Washington or Paris or London, but in San Francisco! (haha)
congratulations!!
That sounds like a wonderful weekend Ashley. I am glad that your family and friends were able to be there to celebrate with you.
Had to check to see if you fell. Happy to hear that you did not, nor even stumble. Did you know that fear of falling in front of a crowd is the 42nd most common fear, right behind inhaling a bug while sleeping and forgetting where you parked your car? True.
Favorite restraurants. Mine are all diners: The Waffle Spot in Dan Diego, the Maine Diner, The Egg & I, and Moody’s Diner, all in Maine. But I’d love to try one of those $100 a pound steaks (Kobe beef) they serve at the White House all the time. They sound yummy, though it might just be the outrageous price making it seem unattainable and therefore desirable.
Sounds like a great weekend. My grandfather calls my step-grandpa his husband in law also! Too funny!
Congrats again!
Congratulations! It sounds like you had a great weekend. I think it’s so hilarious that you were told not to use Twitter at the ceremony! Wow. Imagine what they’ll be telling graduates in 10-15 years from now!
Congratulations! It sounds like an amazing weekend, and I am SO excited that you got your diploma and everything at graduation on Saturday morning. Any exciting summer plans for you?
Congratulations! :)
glad you had a fun weekend with the fam and none of your graduation fears came true! my parents also don’t know how to text. they don’t even have cell phones! when they ask to borrow mine sometimes, they look at it like an alien object they don’t know how to work and ask me to dial :)
so cool that you got your legit diploma that day! I did have to wait forever to get my bachelor’s degree in the mail. and where is it now? oh, stuck in some drawer in the office. nice. I really should get that thing framed. it cost a lot of money!
oh, and as you know, I have a crush on Kirk. Spock too, but I think I like Kirk more. So I don’t know what that says about me. I think it means I like hot guys with serious attitude. But that’s not all bad, right? :)
Your dad rocks.
Also, the fact that you laughed when your brother coughed “nerd” at you is awesome too.
Congratulations! By the way, I am completely jealous of your summer project. It sounds fantastic!
Congratulations!!! :)
You should frame the dimploma of course!
ConGRADulations. Hardy har har! But really, that’s awesome! :)
