Suggestions For the Writing Blog

by Ashley on February 25, 2009

Yeah, the writing blog is a definite go! (See this post if you have no idea what I’m talking about.) Liz, Jessica, and Katie were all interested in co-leading this with me, so we’ve been working feverishly to get this off the ground. The blog launches on Monday.

For those of you who expressed interest in participating or for those of you just reading this now, we need a lot of help. We’re working on the behind the scenes planning and administration, but we need regular contributers. We need content! Being a regular contributer would mean committing to participating on the blog (reading, commenting, etc.) and occasionally submitting content (a question for discussion, a writing prompt, a guest blog post, a video, etc.).

If you tell us in the comments below or by email that you want to be a regular contributer, then we’ll list you on the blog as part of the team. What happens next is that we hope you’ll suggest ideas for content. We’d like you to propose your ideas to us not so that we can scrutinize them, but so that we can coordinate everything. Just let us know that you’d, for instance, like to write a post about your experience writing a short story, so we can say, “How about Tuesday?” and you can say, “Thursday works better,” and we can say, “Thursday it is. Please submit your post by Wednesday night.”

We’re serious about making this interactive, which means that we’re all figuring this out as we go along. Ideas are always welcome, and if you want to become more involved let us know or suggest some ideas for content. We also hope that you’ll help us build this community by promoting the blog.

If you want to sit back for a while, that’s cool too. We hope you’ll give us some feedback if you have any and jump in if you feel the urge.

Okay, so let’s get down to business. It’s brainstorming time. Below is a list of all the major ideas we’re considering. Let us know if you have any thoughts on them or if you have more to add or if you might want to take the lead on pursuing one of them.

  • Blog posts from regular contributers (including us organizers).
  • Discussion questions.
  • Writing prompts (suggested by Gretchen).
  • Other media: Possibly a podcast or video responses to questions in the style of momversation.com (suggested by Megan).

We’re open to all genres of writing and also mediums other than text. If you can somehow connect your idea to writing, then we want to hear about it.

A note about the blog launch: We’re launching the blog on Monday. We want to make an occasion out of it, so we’re hitting the blogosphere hard that morning. On all of our blogs, we’ll be posting a response to a prompt and directing readers to the new blog (the link will be made available Monday morning). We hope also to make a scene on twitter and 20sb. So, if you’re interested, help us out and respond to our prompt that day and direct your readers to the new blog.

My blog allows for threaded comments, so feel free to respond to each other directly.  And, as always, you can reach me at writetoreach [at] gmail [dot] com.

I love the writing prompt idea. I’m not much of a writer, but I might even participate with that one. And I’ll definitely send my readers to your blog on Monday. Good luck!

I plan to participate as much as possible! I’ll be brainstorming while at work today (because honestly, I have NOTHING to do at work) on possibilities.

Will you/anyone be creating a button for the blog (that we can display on our own blogs)? I’ll be twittering about this (meganlhill) to lead followers to this post. I have a few writer friends that are nineteen (so close to twenty!)–can they be involved? Or will it strictly be 20-somethings?

I can’t wait for the launch!

Man, the whole blogworld is being taken over by 20somethings.

This sounds like a great idea that is going to be awesome. Please count me in for support, comments, and a guest post here and there if you like!

I’m interested in being a regular contributor for non-fiction writing, as I mentioned the other day. I’d be most interested in posting about blog writing and technical/instructional writing, as well as how to use your writing skills to get a job. If that sounds like something you’d be interested, e-mail me and I’ll send you some ideas I have for posts. I’d be willing to contribute once a week…ideally on Mondays or Tuesdays. Oh and of course I’ll post and tweet about the blog when it launches. :-)

The whole “momversation” style videos are an amazing idea! I’m not even a mother and I love watching them and hearing what they have to say, so I’m sure even if someone wasn’t really involved with the topic of discussion, it’s still fun to see what your blog friends are thinking. Great ideas, I can’t wait for this to start up!

Ok, sorry I missed all this. I am really intrigued by this new blog and very excited for you. I will direct my readers over to check it out and if I can think of something connected to writing, I might be interested. I mostly do home design and fashion and that probably won’t work, so we’ll have to see.

Good Luck!

Loving the ideas and the what it is going to be all about. Again count me in on anything you need!

Idea: Weekly tips for writers. From other writers about what to use and not to use or do. Or any other tip that people would like to contribute.

Okay, I’m going to keep on think. I’m excited!! And I will defenitly post all about it on my blog on Monday.

Again- count me in for content and I’ll definitely make a post/do whatever I can to get it out there. I’m a great promoter. But, like I said, if you can find a niche for whatever kind of writing I do, I’m in for content.

Hi Ashley, sorry that I’m a bit late to this one, but just wanted to say this is a great idea and I don’t mind helping out, although I’m not sure how! :)

As stated earlier, I would love to participate. My angle in writing tends to be a ‘what now’ sort of approach, so what to do when you are ready to submit your work to different literary venues/journals as well as how to edit your piece and how to give feedback.

So kind of like mini-drills in how to edit, revise, polish and submit.

Would that be helpful?

I would definitely like to be a regular contributor. Maybe I’d focus on the lyrical aspect of songwriting… Anyway, I can definitely contribute posts regularly.
