What’s Your Drink?

by Ashley on January 16, 2009

Thanks everyone for your awesome comments on yesterday’s blog.   I know I asked a lot of you.  If you’re interested in blogging, you should check out those comments!  Sorry I’m MIA from the blogosphere for the next few days, but I’m checking comments from my iPhone.

Number 100 of my 100 Things list is “I do drink, but I know nothing about alcohol. I usually have to ask someone for a recommendation so as not to embarrass myself.”

I’ve had a few drunken nights since I wrote that, but nothing has really changed. I’m still a novice when it comes to drinking.

My best friend from Elementary School is here visiting, and we have plenty of drinking planned.

So, I need your recommendations. If you drink, what do you normally order?

I seriously love you for this post because my 21st bday is on Tuesday and I, like you, have no knowledge of drinks. Heck, I can’t even order my own drinks at a bar, I’m too short and no one ever sees me. But my fave drink is a Long Island Iced Tea because they get you totally trashed. Apparently I inherited the love of the LIIT from my mom. Cosmos are also amazing. Mojitos are ok if they’re fresh. Oh, and lemon drop shots. Get a shot of vodka, a lemon slice and some sugar. Do the shot, squeeze the lemon in your mouth and lick up the sugar. So yummy. Have a good weekend!

Malibu Bay Breezes! Coconut Rum + Pineapple Juice + Cranberry Juice. So good. My fave alcoholic beverage is wine.

I am typically a beer drinker, but on the off hand I do drink mixed drinks — diet and vanilla vodka or long islands ice tea!

A Long Island Ice Tea can get you DRUNK. I like a Tequila Sunrise, it just tastes so yummy. Adios Mother Fuckers are good, and Kamikaze’s are good, too. A Chocolate Cake shot is YUM! And like Jackie said, Mojitos are BOMB, but not a lot of places have them because they need fresh mint to make them.

Vodka tonics, because they’re relatively inexpensive. Also, see this post! http://alasophia.blogspot.com/2008/05/recipe-thursday-birthday-edition.html

I usually drink beer since it’s
oh so cheap. Butttt…when I’m
not drinking beer-I’m usually
drinking vodka cranberry…
gin and tonic….vodka bay breeze
or sex on the beach. Also!
I enjoy midori sours and whiskey
sours…but the midori can get
really sweet.

I don’t like super sweet drinks so I usually order wine if they have a decent wine list (nice cab/syrah/shiraz). If they don’t have a good wine selection and it’s not a martini/margarita bar, I will get a cranberry and vodka. And when I order beer, I make a total fool of myself as I do not know a thing about it.

Generally rose wine (or white, if there’s no rose). I’m also partial to a french martini, or malibu and pineapple juice.

I really love Tom Collins – bar lime, soda and gin – if the right person makes it, it can taste a bit like lemonade.

If it’s a night out with the guys, I’m usually drinking beer.. girly beer, but still beer. If it’s girl’s night out? Raspberry vodka (usually Stoli) and lemonade. It’s sweet, tasty, and you don’t much taste the alcohol which can be dangerous as it means you might end up drinking more! UV Blue(or red) and Sprite is another good girly one.

And if you’re feeling kinda crazy? Do a shot called Sicilian Kiss. ;) Yum!

My standard drink is the gin & tonic. When I’m out, I’ll usually have a couple of those.

And, if you’re some place with a fancy bar, get a mojito. I know a lot of other people have recommended them here but they are quite good. And Hemingway loved to drink them! Ok, that might be a reason only for me but still…

I love red wine but it’s a bit of an acquired taste. At the bar I usually get gin and seven-up with lime or vodka seven-up with lime. Vodka cranberry is also pretty good and you can’t go wrong if you get a bellini! Have fun :-)

I don’t drink, but if I did, I’d be a hardcore wine snob.

I’m all about the margaritas, if they’re good. I cannot stand margarita mix, so I guess that makes me a bit of a margarita-snob. (How many times can one person use margarita in a sentence?!)

I used to drink vodka and ginger ales. Sounds a little strange, but they were easy to drink and not too sweet.

Eventually I went straight for the tequila, which I would sip, slowly, with a beer. That can be nice, too.

Of course, wine (especially with a good meal) can be awesome and I’m pretty knowledgeable when it comes to vineyards, vintages, grapes, etc. I used to work in an Italian restaurant and then a Spanish tapas restaurant. If you ever need any suggestions, hit me up! ;) And have fun! But be safe!!!

Margaritas and mojitos are my favorite. I second the Diet coke and vanilla vodka though….that’s amazing.

Michelob Ultra is my beer of choice. When I can’t have that an ICE cold Bud light will do the trick.
As far as liquor goes, I love Vodka tonics, screwdrivers, Jack & Coke, and Malibu (anything). The easiest things to order at bars are usually the best to order, when it gets complicated there leaves room for error.

My fav cocktail has to be a PINK Flirtini– Made for Sarah Jessica Parker on SATC
* 1 fluid ounce raspberry vodka
* 1/2 fluid ounce Cointreau liqueur
* 1/2 fluid ounce pineapple juice
* 1/2 fluid ounce cranberry juice
* 1 dash fresh lime juice
* 1-2 raspberries
* champagne
Hope you find something you like soon.

xoxo

I probably spend more time in bars than is really healthy, though three days of the week I’m working, so I don’t know if those really ought to count against me. People have listed a lot of drinks I enjoy! I am a huge fan of Mojitos, so long as they are done well, and I quite enjoy whiskey sours – but I like to have a splash of soda added to take the sour down a notch. I also like gin & tonics or vodka tonics. Another refreshing drink is a flavored vodka with soda water and a lime garnish – my pick is Absolut Ruby Red for the vodka. I could probably write volumes on alcohol, but I’ll just add a little more and quit.

Because I tend bar, I have lots of fun making mixed drinks and especially making up new drinks and playing around.

Girly shots are kind of my favorite – here are some you might like:

Washington Apple (for a Washington gal) – 1 part crown, 1 part apple puckerz, 1 part cranberry juice – shaken on ice and strained into a rocks glass.

Georgia Peach (kind of similar…) – 1 part crown, 1 part peach schnapps, 1 part orange juice – shaken on ice and strained into a rocks glass.

Strawberry-blonde (this is one of my own) – 1 part strawberry vodka, 1 part bailey’s, dash of buttershots – shaken on ice and strained into a rocks glass (it tastes like a strawberry creamsaver)

Also fun to drink and at least as fun to order: Duckfarts, buttery nipples, and redheaded sluts. Kamikazes are also lovely and each one tastes a little different – the pama-kazes are nice (made with pomegranate liqueur) and you can choose any flavor of vodka to mix it up.

Oh, and damn, one more thing. Until I tried it, the concept repulsed me, but a well made Bloody Mary is a beautiful thing.

Gin and tonic, 4-eva! Also, I am a crazy wine snob. Thanks, California!
