It’s Friday, and I Feel Fine

by Ashley on December 12, 2008

Better than fine, actually.

  • Wow, it’s amazing the difference one day can make. On Tuesday, I was freaking out. By Wednesday afternoon, I was skipping around campus. I said that it was my applications that were stressing me out the most. What I should have said is that it was my recommendations that were stressing me out the most. And, Wednesday was when I had to ask two of my busiest and most intimidating professors if they could find time in finals week, just before the biggest holiday of the year, to write me recommendation letters and fill out paperwork for seven applications. Oh, and I need them, like, now! I knew they would write me recommendations, but I thought they might laugh in my face at the time line. And, I hate asking people for favors. But, they didn’t laugh at me. They were happy to write the recommendations, and as I handed off the paperwork, it was like weights were being lifted off my shoulders. I swear, there was an extra pop in my step all Wednesday evening.
  • It’s really awesome to have people believe in you. I mean, there’s no shortage of supportive people in my life. My family and friends are awesome. So are you. But, to have professors in my field–aka as, people who do exactly what I want to do–believe that I’m capable, gives me a lot of extra confidence. One of them said, “We’re going to get you into a good school!” And, as the other was looking through the schools I’m applying to, he said, “Of course, we want you to stay here, but these are some excellent choices.” I started off this whole process feeling really hopeful, but after a couple weeks of putting my applications together, I was growing pessimistic. Now, I’m feeling good again.
  • Don’t get me wrong, I still have a crap ton of stuff to do. My finals aren’t over until next Friday, and even after that, I have to continue working on my applications that are due January 1. This weekend, I have to write several papers and finish the applications due on Monday. I’ve also got a bunch of research work to do. So, I’m not really freaking out anymore, but there’s a long road ahead.
  • I love my Christmas lights. Turning them on at night just makes me so happy. I don’t have any other decorations, but the lights along with the NSYNC Christmas CD are getting me into the spirit. I can’t believe that I go home to Washington a week from today.
  • Holy crap! There’s not much chance of me reverting back to political ignorance. Things just grow more and more interesting. I can’t believe this Blagojevich stuff!
  • I tweeted about this on Wednesday, but a library patron seriously asked me if she was allowed to check out more than one book at a time. She was really sweet, but I couldn’t help but laugh.
  • Turns out many of you have dreams as crazy as mine! I don’t feel so alone anymore. If you need a recommendation letter from Obama, let me know. I’ll ask him next time I fall asleep.
  • I was really surprised by the response to my post about Agnosticism. I’ll have to write more about theology in the future.

Have a great weekend everyone!!! Good luck to those of you with finals still left to complete!

The NSynce Christmas CD is the only thing that can really put me in the holiday spirit. Ridiculous but true.

Good luck on finals! I agree so hard about the Christmas lights. I love turning on my tree and putting on classic Christmas music.

Good luck with finals! I totally understand about having a million things to do. I walked into the office today and apparently the whole world fell apart last night while I was sleeping….

I’m glad your rec letters are working out! I’ve never liked asking for those.

Take pictures of your lights!

Grad school = rollercoaster (of lots of things). Good luck with the rest of your work! And I would like to read more of your theological thoughts sometime!

When I was in college and I was totally stressed out during finals time…I would say to myself “Soon, this will all be a memory” and it really seemed to help. Give it a try and good luck!

I watched your video and can totally identify. Well, in a way. I needed glasses when I was about seven, refused to wear them and then got contacts when I was 13. I’ve been wearing them ever since, and hate the idea of having something on my face. I’m REALLY short-sighted so not wearing them isn’t really an option – but I still don’t want to wear glasses. I don’t really suit them, whereas you do!!! If I DID suit them, I might give up on my contacts.

Hope your finals go good!

Oh, man. I’ve been there. Good luck with finals! And I agree with you about the governor of Illinois. The craziness of that situation just doesn’t abate- and apparently, he hasn’t stepped down yet. He might want to consider it. :)
