My favorite band in eighth grade: Semisonic (of “Closing Time” fame). My favorite band from ninth to twelfth grade: NSYNC. Yeah, I don’t know what happened. I blame it on Lisa.
But, what can I say? I could defend myself, but the truth is that some of the most fun I’ve had in my entire life was being an NSYNC fan. We spent the little money we had on rare import CDs I’m still too proud to throw away. We had boxes of video tapes, and stressed over getting every TV appearance recorded. We saw them in concert. We traveled to Vegas to see them–twice. And, if Justin ever stops being too famous for them to go on a reunion tour, I am there.
I’ve been listening to some NSYNC CDs lately, and, to be honest, I’ve thought, “what was I thinking??” But, I stand behind this statement: NSYNC was the best of the 90s-00s boy bands. Want to argue? Let’s! I’d love nothing more than to talk boy bands.
Now, I’m mostly into Semisonic-esque depressing stuff. But, there remains in my heart a place for pop music. It raises the mood like nothing else. Maybe I’ve seen Coldplay in concert seven times, but I’ve seen NYSNC six times (eight times if you count Justin solo). I’ve also seen Britney and even O-town.
If anyone’s interested in reminiscing, here you go:
I Drive Myself Crazy (my favorite NSYNC video)
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays (the song that started it all for me)
No Strings Attached (aka, the best performance ever)
P.S. I was going to marry Lance. Don’t laugh too hard.

It’s sad that I remember girls at my school loving them. Though they liked Justin, you liked Lance? Now that is truly funny. Justin did good on his own and definitely prefer his performance without the others.
I was quite the fan too, but I only saw them in concert once. Lance was also my favorite. I really hope they do a reunion tour. That would be amazing.
O-Town!! And they were one of those MTV reality TV bands as well! I’d forgotten about them!
Aaaah – NSYNC! Embarrasingly, I even got JC Chasez’s Schizophrenic album (funny how it’s not embarrasing to admit getting Justin’s!) :0)
NSYNC was my favorite boy band too, and they still hold a special place in my heart. This is probably because I saw them perform at my high school my freshman year like 1 month before they got famous. I feel like I have already told you this in a previous comment, but it is more appropriate here so oh well! Hehe Lance Bass. :)
yeah…kinda weird to admit this now, but lance was the one all my friends and i wanted to marry, then justin. i went to their popodyssey tour when they came to milwaukee, wisconsin way back when, and i remember them being the first ever venue to play at the brand spankin new brewers baseball stadium with the retractable top. it was really a lot of fun, even though i spent my life savings at the time on the ticket.
Its weird I used to despise N¨sync back then. I had the whole too cool to care about pop bands attitude.
Last year I started listening to them again and its so much fun and I got really into it, I get in a great mood and have a great time with my friends. I actually wish pop music was still like that, deliciously fun to dance too.
This post was rather unfair to my husband–he was bombarded with all those songs. They’re great for nostalgia!
Dude nsync is classic! I like JT so much better NOW but it’s always good to pop in a little nsync every once in a while (or all the time – either way works.)
Good luck marrying Lance! Really.
And I’ll be honest, I do a mean “Digital GetDown.” Seriously.
i was convinced that i was going to marry J.C. i spent new years eve 2000 at an NSYNC concert. they also played a lot of halftime shows at football games in hawaii for some weird reason, and at a carnival once, so i saw them all of those times too. not to mention whenever they vacationed. i also made the first boy i ever seriously liked watch their disney show with me over and over. i think about it now and realize that NSYNC was to me what twilight and robert pattinson are to the now-tweens.
i could probably still do all the dances if i put in a little effort.
ALSO, i almost got kicked out of boarding school for sneaking off to a britney spears concert during my junior year of high school. but i didn’t, and it was free and on a beach in waikiki, so i consider it well worth it. :)
YES! I have a Justin Timberlake poster and my friend bought me a J.T. bobble head. I love ridiculous pop bands and even more ridiculous celebrity crushes.
Oh man. I used to be obsessed with NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys…and briefly O-town when they had their tv show. Lance was my favorite, and I saw them in concert too, when I was in 7th grade. Ahh, memories.
I was TOTALLY going to marry Lance, too! While it broke my heart a little when he came out, I was happy he was happy. I mean, if it’s meant to be, right…???
OMG! I luv JC 4ever!!!!
Our NSYNC obsession was not my fault! I remember watching the Merry Christmas Happy Holidays video at your house, and I didn’t know who it was, but you did, and then we both suddenly LOVED them. Those were good times. Especially the second Vegas concert. Ahhhh memories!
Aww, I was big Backstreet Boys fan in middle school. I did enjoy NYSNC too, though more so after No Strings Attached came out (come on, “Bye Bye Bye” is classic!).
I remember witnessing THE biggest fight between two girls over BSB vs. NSYNC. It was really funny, but kind of… scary? I’ve never such a big throw down over boy bands. But yeah, I was always a BSB girl. AJ was my favorite, haha.
Justin is very good on his own, but I think he’s more fun with the other guys around. I miss those days.
Yay, a Lance fan! I hope they’ll at least do a few shows, even if they never do a full scale reunion.
I don’t own any of JC’s solo stuff. I’m sorry things never really took off for him, though. He’s so talented.
Well, it’s an amazing story!
We laugh now at how much money we spent on them. I probably would have wasted that cash on other stuff if it wasn’t them, though.
I loved Justin, but I thought Lance was more the type I’d like to marry. Ha!
I had the too-cool-to-like-a-boy band attitude even while I still liked them! My friend and I tried to hide it from people, but after a while we lost our shame and just gave in.
I’m so sorry for your husband, but he should be happy he’s getting exposure to all this awesome music. ;)
I like JT now too. He’s more of a serious artist, so I like to listen to NSYNC just for fun.
I thought that song was sooo scandalous. Really, it kind of is. And, pshh, I wouldn’t want Lance now even if he was attracted to women!
Or like Rob Pattinson now is to me. ;) Lisa and I watched that Disney show soo many times. Actually, we spent most of our time watching NSYNC videos. I’d like to see you do those dance moves!
Ha ha, I never had the bobble head, but I really wanted it. My walls were covered with posters. Pop is just so much fun.
O-town was pretty good at first, and they were good in concert too!
Yeah, it just wasn’t meant to be. I’m still hoping for Justin, though. ;)
That’s soo not how it happened. “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays” came on at my birthday party, and you were like, “I’m going to marry that guy.” Elyse and I were like, “who?” So, you pointed out JC. I didn’t know anything about them, so you told me who they were and said you’d seen IWYB on that weird music video channel (The Box?). From there, I definitely took the ball and ran with it, because I’m more prone to obsession and you’re much more reasonable.
That Vegas show was like the happiest moment of my life.
I might have overused “like” in this comment.
You know when you’re thinking as you type, but you omit words by accident? Like, as you’re thinking, every word is there but they’re really not after you type it out. That’s what happened on that comment.
I accidentally omit words all the time!
I sooo didn’t have you pegged as an AJ fan. Do you know that I actually saw him once in real life? I worked at a Bed, Bath, and Beyond in Southern California (this was 2002-2003), and he came in to shop! I really only saw him walk by, but it was crazy. I haven’t seen that many celebrities in real life (and not at a concert or something).
