Stupid Questions

by Ashley on November 24, 2008

I’d really like to punch someone in the face right now. Not anyone in particular–just someone.

I’m not angry or depressed or unhappy. I just want to punch someone.

I’m annoyed at library patrons who don’t have their cards ready and don’t know how to use a library. Soon I’ll be like the library version of the Soup Nazi. I’d like to be that person who answers every question cheerfully, and I usually am, but I spend too much time here to keep it up 100%.

I don’t hate my job. I like it actually. And, I feel really lucky to have it.

I’ll walk away tonight feeling perfectly fine.

But, hold me back from the next person who asks a stupid question. As someone who wants to teach, I think I’m obligated to believe there is no such thing as a stupid question. But, there definitely is. The last ten people I’ve talked to have provided all the proof I need.

Now take that experience and imagine working for a bank.

Common sense is not as common as one would like to believe. Take a deep breath and keep reminding yourself why you like your job. Everyone has bad days. :)

Deep breaths, deep breaths. There will be days like this, but you’ll get through! Like Astharis says, common sense isn’t as common as you think.

Amen.

About a week ago, a competitor called to ask me something, and she asked how my day was going.

“Do you ever just want to start punching your clients in the face?”

“Sure,” she said.

“OK,” I said. “As long as it’s not just me.”

I don’t even want to imagine it. People are way more serious about their money than they are about their library books.
