I’ve Missed You, Jim Halpert

by Ashley on October 24, 2008

We all love Jim, right? Right. But, I have to admit something, and I think it’s finally safe to do so. Even though I do like most of what the writers of The Office have done with Jim over the last couple seasons, so much of the time, he didn’t feel like the same guy I giggled over and commiserated with in seasons one and two.

In season three, he was going through some things. I understand. In season four, I don’t know what happened.

But, season five, well, it’s like the progdigal son has returned. I don’t even know what the difference is. I guess it’s the jokes. Or, maybe it’s that when the series began, Jim (even more than Pam) was our entry point into a crazy world where on any given day your boss might throw an awards night at Chilli’s or grill his foot on a George Foreman Grill. This season it feels like we’re getting a lot more one-on-one time with Jim. He’s talking to us again about what’s going on in the office, and it feels like old times. Welcome home, Jim. I missed you.

I hope you remember that scene from “The Convention” and aren’t thinking right now that I don’t know how to spell prodigal.  I even know how to pronounce it.

In general, I’ve been more pleased with the show this year than I was over the past couple years — specifically last year. I think the writing has been better. I didn’t narrow it down to Jim, but I think you’re on to something. He does seem back to normal. Also, the bit where he was timing Dwight using company time to do anything other than work? Pure vintage Office.

Season 4 was just messed up. I agree that this season is doing much better. Although I still don’t like that Pam isn’t there. Something seems off without her at the reception desk. Or did she come back last night? Maybe I should watch the newest episode before I complain :)

I really need to try and give the US version of “The Office” a chance. I tried watching the first episode but it just seemed to be using the same gags as the UK one. Obviously since the UK version finished after two seasons and an extended christmas special and the US version is still going on, there must be a lot more originality there than I thought! :)

joshlos: I totally agree. The writing is overall better this year. And, I almost died when Jim was talking to Andy about Dumbledore needing to get the ring to Mordor.

Lisa: I don’t know why, but I’m okay with Pam being away. I love her, but I think she needs to pursue things outside of the office.

Paula: Yeah, the first season was mostly the UK version with different actors. The US version really came into its own in season 2. Now it’s gone way beyond the UK version, since the UK version had so few episodes.

I agree; Season 5 has been much better than the last. I find myself in fits of giggles more often!
