That’s a line from the Semisonic song “Surprise.” I can’t just say the words without singing them the way Dan Wilson does in the song.
Weird to think you’re always making decisions, even when you think you’re standing still. Doing nothing, well, that’s actually doing something. Inaction is as much an action as anything else.
When a friend needs you, and you don’t respond, you’re showing the kind of friend you are.
When the person you love is standing right in front of you, but you can’t say how you feel, don’t think you’re not sending a very big message.
If you’re a writer who doesn’t write, a reader who doesn’t read, a runner who doesn’t run, you’re determining your own fate.
Your dreams aren’t going to stand around waiting to be realized.
There is no safety net. No one guaranteeing that things will work out in the end.
The world will push you around, shape your life, but don’t think you don’t have a say.

This was really great. I’m so tired of hearing people say “Oh, I love to (fillintheblank) but I just dont have time.”
I, Katie Colihan LOVE to write. Its all I think about. And I make time. I HAVE to do it. Bottom line, if you want to do something, you will do it.
I love this post. I was just thinking about how scary it was to have absolutely no safety net. All of the decisions I make now directly affect my future.
So many people have dreams that they never pursue and that’s sad.
really well said and i like how you categorized it introspection
I think this is so true. If you really want to be a writer, artist, politician, whatever, you really have to take action to make these dreams come true.
wow, loved this post Ashley! I love them all but this one hit me in the right spot today :) you rock!
I really appreciate this post. It’s a lot of stuff I need to remind myself more often.
this post was like the swift kick i’ve been needing. i think it’s often so easy for us to make excuses for ourselves when we’re lazy or scared, or even just indifferent in the end. and it’s important to remind ourselves that this attitude is what lays the foundation for regrets. so thanks!
I’ve been stalling on my dreams for a while now, but recently I have been feeling far more compelled to just make it all happen on my terms! To use a horrible cliche, sometimes you just have to jump.
If it wasn’t obvious, I was writing to myself. Strange how so many of us need to hear the same things.
Thank you for all the wonderful comments.
I am guilty of procrastinating long enough so that I don’t have to make decisions. :) I figure it makes life more exciting for me. AND I can NEVER complain because it’s my own fault I took so long.
